Working in collaboration with photographer and artist Bob DiBono, Rust Belt is a series and upcoming zine paying attention to industrial spaces in the twenty-first century. The images in this series search for a unifying aesthetic of the post-industrial landscape of America, observing details that draw attention to both the beauty in and the reality of communities marred by the language of rust and decaying capital. Shot primarily between Brooklyn and Schenectady in the state of New York, Rust Belt explores both locations as spaces with enduring life despite the overwhelming representation of industrial death and decay in each space. The complete zine with images from both DiBono and Pomykaj, accompanying an essay by Pomykaj, will be available for purchase in the Fall of 2024. All photos shown here are Pomykaj’s.
